I received this thing from the DMV when my license was mailed. Charts, dropdown menus, lists, etc. always list "male" before "female", even though "female" comes first in alphabetical order. And yet, lists etc. take care to list ethnic or racial groups, and religions, in alphabetical order (as they should). Because list order connotes order of importance. Why do people always list male before female? Why say "male or female" instead of "female or male"?
